These past two years have seen extraordinary wait times for communications from USCIS. Processing times for applications for work authorization, adjustment of status, and asylum have exploded.
What can you do while you're waiting?
1) Document all of your communications with USCIS - have your application tracked and keep the tracking number. Keep a copy of all sent and received emails. Take notes - including time and date - during all phone calls.
2) Apply for benefits while in process. If your application for adjustment or asylum is pending, you may be eligible to request work authorization, a social security card, government benefits, and in some states a drivers license.
3) Alert USCIS that your application is beyond processing time. Though wait times are long, they are not indefinite. If you have gone beyond the reported processing time, you may alert USCIS via phone call or online. This won't result in an adjudication the next day, but you may get a more specific answer as to how much longer you have to wait.
