Meta’s Muse Image Shutdown: What Performers Should Know

Meta has officially shut down Muse Image, the AI image generator it briefly tested inside Instagram. But for performers and creators, the story doesn’t end there.

The positions of artists' unions and performers' rights advocates are straightforward:   AI systems should not be allowed train on, replicate, or generate derivatives of a performer’s likeness or copyrighted work without informed consent and fair compensation. Muse Image seemingly violated that principle by drawing on private user photos without meaningful disclosure — creating outputs that could resemble real people or their creative work.

Critically, while Meta discontinued the feature, it has not promised to remove the images generated during the three days Muse Image was live.

This means AI‑generated images of your posts may still be on Instagram as ordinary posts. Performers may still encounter unauthorized derivatives of their likeness or work circulating on the platform, even though the tool responsible has been shut down.

Muse Image’s removal is a step, but not a complete remedy. The underlying outputs — and the rights questions they raise — are still out there.

At Hannibal Legal, we’re watching closely as platforms navigate AI, copyright, and performer protections. If you believe your likeness or work may have been used in AI training or derivative generation, we can help you understand your rights and next steps. Feel free to contact us for a consultation.
